about

Clockwork is a kind of musical novel. One inner Journey of an unsettled and wayward soul.
If you can, you might try to experience it as such, one time at least, in an uninterrupted listen.

Most of the music originally written for a 2004 National Theatre funded production which was a contemporary take on fellow mancunian Anthony Burgess' "A Clockwork Orange"

The director was another fellow mancunian, Benji Reid, who was fantastically inspirational and encouraging with his energy. At the time he was a fan of some of the Cinematic Orchestra work I'd been involved with and that was a good starting point for the both of us.
One of the tracks (Falldown) used some multi-tracks from a Cinematics session where we'd tried a piece of mine that ended up not getting used. I dug it out and it fit well into the rest of the pieces with great playing from the 'Everyday' era Cinematic Orchestra band, my old friends Luke Flowers, Phil France & P.C.

5 % Sounds is a poem written by Michael Clift, an old school friend. I heard him read it once and it moved me to tears. In the original theatre production the piece 'Music' was written to accompany a speech made by Alex, the main character, a disturbed and violent and dangerous young man, about his love for music. I didn't want to use something so specific and as I was getting this album together in 2022, I remembered Michael's poem and what do you know it fit perfectly and felt right. Michael took his own life in 2018 all proceeds from the digital sales of this album will go to C.A.L.M. (The Campaign Against Living Miserably)

I was working with Benji and the cast throughout the theatre production, attending the rehearsals in Kennington, London and involved in the development which was really a joy though the subject matter was very intense and dark.
It coincided with a depressive period I was going through myself at the time and it definitely was a case of me using this work situation as a catharsis for some of my own demons.
That might be the main reason why I never thought to release the music until now and in going through the material and adding some little extras to forge this album, it's been a strange trip back to a dark cave, but rewarding in that way that it's good sometimes to look head on into this stuff that we carry around with us in order to transmute it and find some pearls.
I hope you find something similar. Enjoy!
